Intent

At Horbury Primary, it is our intent that all children will be lifelong learners with the confidence and ability to develop their skills and understanding when having new experiences, meeting new challenges and finding themselves in unfamiliar situations. We aim to help children to understand and value how they and others fit into and contribute to the world. We have a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health through the delivery of a programme of engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole school approach. Through this we also promote and practise mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus. Our approach aims to develop the qualities and attributes children need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society and the global community. Good relationships are fundamental to our ethos and throughout our PSHE curriculum we teach Relationships and Sex Education (RSE). Embedding learning about relationships, emotions, looking after ourselves, different families, sex, sexuality and sexual health. We aim for the children in our school to acquire the appropriate knowledge, develop their skills and form positive beliefs, values and attitudes. RSE has a key part to play in the personal, social, moral and spiritual development of young people.

When children leave Horbury Primary Academy, we aim for our children to have developed:

  • The knowledge that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships and to build their self-efficacy.
  • The ability to put this knowledge into practice as they develop the capacity to make sound decisions when facing risks, challenges and complex contexts as they face difficult situations in their lives.
  • Resilience, to know how and when to ask for help, and to know where to access support.
Implementation

PSHE is implemented using the One Life  programme which is a whole school approach. Progression in skills and knowledge in the subject are outlined in the PSHE POLO (progression of learning objectives) document. The curriculum for PSHE is delivered throughout the whole school through our One Life scheme of learning.

Our PSHE programme deals with the diverse beliefs, values and attitudes that individuals and societies hold. It helps pupils to develop themselves, their understanding of the world, and their ability to communicate their feelings.

RSE is taught within One Life lessons and science curriculum but is also embedded in other areas of the curriculum. Children are taught by familiar adults who they have a good rapport with, in order to facilitate constructive and supportive discussions around sensitive topics in a safe and secure environment. The RSE curriculum has been mapped out clearly in the progression grids for PSHE and science which ensure coverage of all of the statutory elements by the end of the primary phase; these are delivered at the appropriate stage for our children. Through our rigorous and progressive curriculum, children develop key skills and are prepared for the wider world beyond primary school, a world in which they can keep themselves safe and healthy and thrive with the support of the positive relationships they forge with those around them.

Impact

Through our curriculum, our ultimate aim is for children to be ready to lead successful, healthy and safe adult lives. We believe we can enhance children’s education and help them to become caring, respectful, responsible and confident individuals and citizens. Through our embedded RSE curriculum we aim for all pupils to have a good understanding of the complexities of relationships and a secure knowledge and skills base to navigate their way through these, now and in the future. Through our curriculum, we believe we can enhance children’s education and help them to become confident individuals who have positive body awareness, an in-depth knowledge of how to keep themselves safe and healthy and who will, through respect, tolerance and understanding, forge and maintain positive relationships with a diverse range of family and friendship groups. Progress against the learning objectives is monitored and recorded across school.
